4 Best Study Skills

It’s the end of the semester and the finals are approaching. Engulfed with laziness, and surrounded by distractions, don’t you just wish that there’s a way for you to absorb all the information needed to be learnt in just a night’s time? Preferably one that works as simple as osmosis in water. Nevertheless, truth is, there is none. Desirable and effective study skills have to be acquired and applied regularly for them to work. Nothing comes by easy and without the investment of effort and time. Just like the old saying that goes, “in life, there are no free lunches”. Thus, it’s high time that you shake that thought off your mind and read the following article about the necessary study skills, in hopes of preparing you for this semester, if not the following one if it’s a tad bit too late for now.

1. Time-Table

Even though there are people out there who work well with last-minute cramming, you know that you’re not one of them and that’s why you’re here. Other than being envious of them, a better solution to that would be managing your time well by setting up a timetable for your study. Explicitly list out your exam dates and the number of topics and chapters that are ought to be covered. Then, spread them out within your study weeks accordingly. You may designate more time to heavier subjects or those that you are weaker in and vice versa. By doing so, it ensures that every subject is covered and none is left out. Remember, thriving in a single subject should not be your goal.

2. Group Study

There is a myth going around saying that study groups are merely chit-chat and catching-up sessions disguising as intellectual discussions. Undeniably, part of it is true because friends could sometimes act as a distraction when they don’t know when to zip their lips. Contrastingly, as distracting as it could be, it may be equally as effective as well because you could ask each other questions to clear up your doubts about a certain topic. You could also share information that you all know with each other. Sharing is indeed caring. Besides, studying in groups could result in a domino effect. When you see your friends studying diligently, it may elicit the industrious gene in you, driving you to study harder. And the next time when you study with another group of friends, you could act as the trigger of the domino effect rather than the one being triggered.

3. Take A Break

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. We can’t agree more to this saying, now can we? There’s a common misconception that it’s best to study for as many hours as possible. Nevertheless, the truth is this act could actually be counterproductive because it’s exhausting the brain and in the end, none of the information gets retained. Taking regular breaks could resolve this. Everyone’s break time is different. For instance, if you’re a night owl who’s more productive during the night, then go ahead taking a longer break during the day to keep you energized to pull through the night.

4. Practice, Practice and Practice

Last but not least, once you have mustered all the information in your brain, now it’s time to practice with past year papers. This helps you get used to the format of the questions. Also, do time yourself while working on the papers to help you have a grasp of how much time you should spend on each sections. This ensures that you have ample time to complete your paper and not end up submitting empty answer scripts. So heed to these advices and start studying.
